The Actual Process
Some machines, including several of Breville's, have their own automated cleaning cycle triggered by a flashing light — follow that built-in process if your machine has one rather than the manual steps below. For a manual backflush: swap your regular basket for a blind (solid, no-holes) basket in the portafilter, add the dose of a purpose-made espresso machine cleaner listed on the product (Cafetto and Cafiza are two commonly used ones), and run the pump for about 10 seconds, then stop for 10 seconds. Repeat that cycle roughly 5 to 10 times, until the water draining out runs clear instead of brown.
